Inside Government with PoliticsNY: A Q&A with NYS Gaming Commission’s Division of Gaming Director Thomas Fattorusso

Thomas Fattorusso

PoliticsNY is excited to introduce the first Inside Government special edition, Inside Government: Racing, Gaming & Wagering. This special edition features the public officials shaping New York’s racing, gaming and wagering landscape. Today’s Q&A is with Thomas Fattorusso. Thomas Fattorusso is director of the New York State Gaming Commission’s division of gaming. This division oversees sports wagering, commercial casinos, video lottery, Indian gaming and interactive fantasy sports in New York.

How does the racing, gaming and wagering industry benefit New Yorkers?
The Gaming Division includes sports wagering and commercial casinos – both of which generate billions of dollars in revenue for public education and local governments.

What improvements would you like to see made to racing, gaming and wagering in New York?
Per Governor Hochul’s charge, we are focused on preventing underage individuals from gambling – particularly via sports wagering apps. We are working on several initiatives to curb the activity.

How do you see new technology impacting racing, gaming and wagering in the future?
As Governor Hochul pointed out, artificial intelligence has a real role in gaming – both positive and negative. For instance, AI can possibly help identify wagering patterns that may be indicative of gambling harms, and flag account holders who may be experiencing such for help.

What is a recent change to the racing, gaming and wagering industry that you are excited about?
New York City will soon be host to three commercial casinos that underwent thorough scrutiny by the host community and the Gaming Facility Location Board. We are working with all three to effectuate a smooth and seamless opening.

What influenced you to join this industry?
After retiring from a rewarding career in federal law enforcement, I wanted to continue my service as a public servant. Working at the Gaming Commission offers me an exciting opportunity to be a part of a growing industry and allows me to serve the citizens of New York.
