Southern Brooklyn/Staten Island State Sen. Diane Savino said yesterday that the race to get the Democratic nod to run against GOP candidate Danny Donovan for the 11th Congressional seat remains wide open.

“My advice is to raise money, and meet with constituent groups to demonstrate who is the best candidate,” said Savino, who is a Staten Island resident, and part of the Richmond County Democratic Committee, who ultimately will pick the Party candidate.

Savino also dismissed a recent media outlet report that the committee was turning to Bay Ridge City Council Member Vincent Gentile and that Bensonhurst Assembly Member Bill Colton wasn’t being taken seriously.

“Here’s a guy (Colton) who’s been in office 20 years, is very popular in his part of the district and he produces a significant amount of votes, and his United Progressive Democratic club is one of the most active clubs in Brooklyn. So to say he shouldn’t be taken seriously is just plain stupid,” said Savino.

Savino, however, stopped short of endorsing Colton.

“No one has asked me for their support so I’m like the debutante at the ball,” said Savino. “Any of the people mentioned would be great candidates.”
