Zohran was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, serving Astoria and Long Island City. As a legislator, he has won over $100M for increased subway and bus service and a successful fare-free bus pilot; led a 10-month fight alongside taxi drivers—including participating in a 15-day hunger strike—to secure $450M in transformative debt relief; and helped defeat a proposed gas power plant in his district. He’s running for mayor to make this city more affordable, with a plan to freeze the rent for over 2 million tenants, construct 200,000 permanently-affordable homes over the next decade, and provide universal childcare.
