President Donald Trump will be in New York City on Monday, where he will meet with Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s office told amNewYork in a statement on Sunday.
“Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet with President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion on Monday, September 21,” the statement read. “The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”
Trump will be in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is expected to speak on Tuesday. High-level general debates begin on Tuesday, Sept 22, and will continue through Monday, Sept. 28, at the UN’s East Midtown location.
This will not be the first time the two officials have met since Mamdani took office on Jan. 1 in Trump’s hometown. The pair met at the White House in February, where they discussed housing and the detention of a Columbia University student, Elmina Aghayeva, by federal immigration authorities.
“I had a productive meeting with President Trump this afternoon. I’m looking forward to building more housing in New York City,” Mamdani wrote in a social media post directly after the meeting.
After meeting with Mamdani, Trump called the mayor to let him know that Aghayeva was released from custody — a move confirmed by Columbia University.
“The university is relieved and thrilled that our student, Ellie, has been released from detainment,” the school posted on social media on Feb. 26.
Mamdani previously met with Trump in Washington, DC, in Nov. 2025, shortly after winning the mayoral race. Despite their political differences — and name-calling that has included “fascist” for Trump and “lunatic” for Mamdani — the two appeared cordial during the meeting in front of reporters and cameras, a tone that has appeared to continue in the months since.
Monday will be the first time the pair will have met in NYC. While the specific agenda for tomorrow’s meeting remains unknown, a New York Times article suggests deportation and infrastructure might be among the topics of discussion.
