Colder weather often means higher heating bills, but there are ways to keep costs in check. National Grid offers New Yorkers a range of rebates, incentives, and support programs, helping households of all kinds, regardless of income, manage energy expenses as temperatures fall.

“Affordability matters deeply to us, and we’re committed to delivering safe, reliable energy while giving New Yorkers the tools to stay in control of their bills,” said National Grid Director of External Affairs for New York City Andrew Mulvey. “Whether you want to reduce your energy use, find bill assistance, or just find more efficient ways to manage your monthly costs, our teams are here to help.”

Assistance programs

For customers who need direct support, National Grid’s payment assistance programs offer several paths forward. Households receiving Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) grants or who are enrolled in qualifying government assistance programs may be eligible for a monthly bill credit through the Energy Affordability Program (EAP).

Customers behind on payments can also set up a payment plan to spread past due balances across manageable monthly installments, with options that vary by customer type.

Cutting costs

If you have a smart thermostat with central gas heat, the ConnectedSolutions program can help you save. This program rewards you for letting your thermostat automatically lower energy use during peak demand. You’ll earn cash back and help reduce stress on the gas network during the coldest days.

It’s $25 just for enrolling, plus another $25 at the end of each winter season starting in year three. Don’t have a smart thermostat? Find out how to get one here.

Staying safe

As furnaces and boilers kick back on, National Grid also urges customers to stay safe this season by doing the following:

  • Have heating equipment inspected yearly by a professional.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector near bedrooms.
  • Never use a gas range to heat your home.
  • Never run a generator indoors.
  • If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and call 911.

National Grid understands how a tough winter can affect a household. National Grid’s rebates, payment plans, and one-on-one guidance from the company’s Consumer Advocates is designed to lighten that load for families across the city.

No one should have to choose between staying warm and staying afloat, and National Grid is here to make sure you don’t have to face that choice alone.
