Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa (D-Upper Manhattan) officially launched her 2021 campaign for City Council yesterday.
De La Rosa made the announcement yesterday afternoon at a meet-and-greet at La Plaza de Las Americas, 651 West 175th St. At the event, she pledged that, as Councilwoman, she will continue the work she’s done as an Assemblymember – namely, fighting against systemic racism, homelessness and income inequality in her district. She also named affordable housing, accessible healthcare and aid for small businesses as some of her top priorities.
“I am proud to have served our community in the State Assembly and I’m now ready to take my leadership experience to the City Council,” she said. “We deserve a leader who has the experience and will fight alongside our community. I have listened to those who have been ignored for too long, and I have fought for our needs. I will keep championing the issues that affect our community, as I have done throughout my career in the State Assembly.”
She will be running for City Council District 10, which covers the neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Inwood and Marble Hill. As a lifelong resident of the area, she asserted that she has an intimate knowledge of what its constituents need. As such, her platform includes policies related to working-class issues, such as rezoning, housing security and food justice.
“I won’t sit back and watch as the billionaires are benefitting from this pandemic and the working class are losing their jobs,” she said. “This campaign is about the needs of our District residents in Washington Heights, Inwood and Marble Hill, in this particular time of crisis.”
