The field to replace City Councilman and current Public Advocate-elect Jumaane Williams’ vacant 45th Council District seat just got broader and brighter.

Social media star FlatbushGirl, a.k.a. Esther Adina Miles Sash is said to be strongly considering a run for the City Council seat. She has a strong social media presence with over 45,000 followers who tune in daily for her engaging and irreverent political views.

While Sash would not confirm or deny she is running, she did confirm she lives in the 45th District, which includes East Flatbush, Flatbush, Flatlands, Marine Park, and Midwood. While the district is mainly Caribbean black it also has a solid Jewish base.

Sash made her political debut last year challenging longtime district leader Margarita Kagan for female democratic district leader in the 45th Assembly District. Sash didn’t win, but got an opportunity to increase her political presence as an Orthodox Jewish activist and outspoken woman.

Sash will most likely appeal to progressive voters of the district who see her as a young start up and fresh face in local government. Sash also has strong support from progressive Frum women and men, who are her social media base.

She will probably struggle in East Flatbush as she will go head-to-head with current favorite Farah Louis who has the backing of Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte (D-Flatbush, Ditmas Park). Also expected to make a strong run is Monique Chandler-Waterman.

Sash’s entry into the race now splits the field seven ways, across a broad spectrum of community activist and longtime political operatives.

Sash is a mother of three boys and holds a master’s degree in Medieval literature from Brooklyn College.
