Brooklyn Murder, Felony Crime Continues to Fall In 2018

While reported murders citywide has seen a slight increase at the six-month mark in 2018, it continues to decline in Brooklyn, according to the latest New York City Police Department figures.

Citywide there have been 146 reported murders through the end of June this year as compared to 137 at this time in 2017 or a 6.6% increase.

But in Brooklyn, there have been 50 reported murders through the end of June in 2018 as compared to 57 in the same time period last year for a roughly 12% reduction in this reported crime.

Among the neighborhoods reporting the sharpest drop in reported murders include East Flatbush, which is mainly under the jurisdiction of the 67th Police Precinct. According to official NYPD statistics, there have been 3 reported murders at the halfway mark of 2018 as compared to 10 at this point in 2017 for a 70 percent drop in this crime.

In Brooklyn’s overall felony crime categories taken together including murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft, the borough is down about 3% at the halfway point of 2018 compared to the same time frame in 2017.

This includes the highly active 67th Precinct, which has seen a nearly 14% drop in reported felony crime for the year as compared  to last year. Of these categories, the biggest drop in the precinct was in reported robbery. There was 119 reported robberies at the halfway point of 2018 as compared to 179 at the halfway point of 2017 for a 33.5% drop in this crime.

On the flip side Brownsville and Bedford-Stuyvesant all saw increases in reported murders. This includes the 73rd Precinct covering Brownsville and Ocean Hill, where there have been nine reported murders at the halfway mark of this year as compared to five last year for a 80 percent increase. Overall felony crime is up 1.5 percent for the first six months of 2018 as compared to the same time period in 2017.

The 79th precinct covering Bedford-Stuyvesant has seen four reported murders in the first half of 2018 as compared to one in 2017 for a 300% increase. The precinct also saw a 8.53% percent increase in overall reported felony crime in the first half of this year as compared to the same time frame in 2017.
