Joe Scianablo, a Garden City resident, Marine Corps veteran and former New York City police officer and prosecutor, declared victory on election night over Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti, a shocking upset in the longtime Republican stronghold.
Scianablo was leading Ferretti with more than 10,000 votes and a 51% margin over Ferretti’s 47%, according to unofficial early returns tallied by the Nassau County Board of Elections. Ferretti did not concede the race, but Nassau GOP Chair Joe Ciaro said “it was not our night.” The Democrat is projected to be elected as the town’s next supervisor, along with Democrat Joylette Williams for town clerk defeating Republican incumbent Kate Murray. This was Scianablo’s second consecutive run for the position, and he centered his campaign on government transparency, financial accountability and improving basic town services.
