Council Member Joann Ariola joined local advocates and representatives from the city’s Office of Marine Debris Disposal and Vessel Surrendering in Broad Channel Tuesday afternoon to witness the removal of three boats from Jamaica Bay and celebrate the removal of over 260 vessels from the bay since Ariola took office.
Ariola, who successfully introduced legislation to create the office in 2022, said the Oct. 27 surrendering event is part of a citywide initiative encouraging boat owners to contact the city and have their boats removed from the water with “no questions asked” rather than abandoning them if they no longer have the means to care for their vessels.
