New York City lawmakers want some of the biggest names in artificial intelligence to answer questions under oath about the safety of their rapidly advancing technology, and Council Speaker Julie Menin says subpoenas are on the table if they don’t show up.
Menin has called a rare hearing of all 51 City Council members for Oct. 5 as lawmakers consider new safeguards around AI. She initially sent letters to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei saying their companies’ participation was expected. On Friday, Menin announced she had also sought participation from Meta, Google and X.
