Nassau and Rensselaer counties were the only two in New York that had not told the state they were complying with a new law banning formal cooperation agreements between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Tuesday, as about 30 people rallied in Mineola demanding Nassau County end its agreement with ICE.
The Local Cops, Local Crimes Act took effect Tuesday, prohibiting state and local law enforcement agencies from entering into or maintaining 287(g) agreements that allow local officers to assist with federal civil immigration enforcement.
