The Islamic Hillside Cemetery is currently awaiting site plan, building permit, and fire marshal approvals for the construction of the roughly 14-acre Muslim cemetery on Beaver Dam Road in Bellport.
The Town of Brookhaven voted 7-0 on May 14 to approve the cemetery for the Hillside Islamic Center, which would be one of the first cemeteries on Long Island reserved exclusively for Muslim burials. The cemetery, proposed for up to 12,000 burial plots along with a place of worship designed to hold about 100 people with 40 parking spaces, will serve the greater New York City and Long Island metropolitan area. The Suffolk County Legislature passed the application 17-0 on May 12, after initially tabling the vote over inaccurate road names in the filing.
