Following last week’s prolonged power outage that impacted residents near 69th Street and Eliot Avenue, Council Member Phil Wong met with senior Con Edison officials on Wednesday, June 24, to “review the cause of the outage, the company’s response, and the steps being taken to reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions in the future,” as confirmed in a press release.
According to Con Edison, the outage was caused by “severe storm damage” to aging electrical equipment that could not be repaired and had to be fully replaced. The company was said to have acknowledged the complexity of replacing said equipment and, coupled with the failure of an initial backup generator, significantly extended restoration efforts.
