As NYC votes, open primary advocates press Mamdani panel to let more than 1 million voters into primaries

As New Yorkers cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary, open-primary advocates are pressing Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s charter revision commission to revisit a long-running City Hall fight over who gets to participate in the city’s primary elections.

Open Primaries President John Opdycke is expected to testify Tuesday evening at a Staten Island hearing of Mamdani’s Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE), according to the organization, keeping pressure on the panel as it gathers public input on possible changes to the City Charter.
