Campaign Insiders is PoliticsNY’s latest Q&A series featuring candidates running for office in the 2026 New York primary election. This edition of Campaign Insiders features Pia Rahman who is running to represent New York’s 37th Assembly District. The 37th Assembly District is located in Queens and includes Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Maspeth and Ridgewood.
What are the top three issues for your campaign?
Legislatively, I deeply care for healthcare, immigration and affordability. On the budget side, I intend to push for healthcare, education and transportation.
Why did you decide to run for office?
I decided to run for AD 37 because I deeply care about this community and believe it deserves steady, thoughtful representation. Ultimately, I want to ensure that the voices of residents are reflected in the decisions that shape our neighborhoods. I’m committed to strengthening connections between government and the community, while making sure people feel supported. I also intend to serve with integrity and contribute to a stronger, more inclusive future for our district.
What do you believe is the top issue facing voters and how do you plan to address it if elected?
Voter apathy and low civic engagement are significant challenges. While it’s understandable that many people feel overwhelmed by global issues, I want to encourage a different perspective by proving to everyone that even small local elections can make a big difference. I intend to help all my constituents feel more connected to their community, the campaign, and myself. My aim is to inspire more participation and give people the confidence to go out and vote.
How does your background qualify you to hold office?
Running for office reflects my commitment to Queens and its communities. I began as a staffer for local elected officials and now serve on Community Board 2, focusing on affordable housing, coastal flood preparedness, and school capacity. My healthcare experience during COVID-19 gave me insight into providers and patients, reinforcing my commitment to a more equitable system. I will fight for small businesses, healthcare access, and reliable public transit. Queens deserves leadership that reflects the community.
Why should voters choose you over your opponents?
First and foremost, I don’t see the other candidates as “opponents”, but rather fellow candidates. What sets me apart is my background as a healthcare professional, which brings a practical, public health – focused perspective. I’m focused on stability in a district that has seen frequent turnover, and I’m committed to grassroots engagement through my work on Community Board 2 and direct outreach to residents. Having lived across New York, I also bring a broader perspective.
