A recent report released by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has raised significant concerns about the escalating threat of cybercrime in New York State.
DiNapoli’s investigation revealed a jarring 53% increase in cyberattacks between 2016 and 2022 in the Empire State, with the number of incidents surging from 16,426 to a staggering 25,112 over those four years.
The situation has only worsened in 2023, with a nearly twofold increase in attacks targeting the state’s critical infrastructure since last year. In the first half of 2023, there were 83 attacks on vital infrastructure systems, compared to 48 throughout the entirety of 2022 — including attacks on the power grid and water supply.
