Cumbo To Participate in NYC Go Purple Day, Domestic Violence Awareness Event

City Council Member Laurie Cumbo

New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights) will join the Office of Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence and other elected officials to take part in a citywide Domestic Violence Awareness Outreach today.

For the fifth consecutive year Cumbo along with advocates and other leaders will be celebrating NYC Go Purple Day, in which individuals across the city will be dressed in purple to disseminate pertinent information to morning commuters on resources available citywide for domestic violence survivors.

Domestic violence remains an issue of critical importance in New York City and around the world. Twenty-five percent of women nationwide will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

In New York City, over half (60.3%) of the 63 homicides in 2016 involved an intimate partner, with Black women being the victim of intimate partner homicide at a rate three times higher than the rate among the rest of New York City. Barriers to reporting and safety still remain, with Latinas being half as likely to report domestic violence due to fears about immigration.

The event is slated for 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., today, Wednesday, Oct 24., at  the 2/3/4/5 Franklin Avenue Subway Station on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.

CM Williams To Honor NYPD Hero With ‘Chief Brennan Award’

Jumaane Williams
City Council Member Jumaane Williams

City Council member Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood) will present New York Police Department (NYPD) Detective Dalsh Veve from the 67th Precinct with the Annual Chief Patrick D. Brennan award today.

The annual award is named after former Assistant Chief Patrick D. Brennan. Williams will present the Detective with a City Council Proclamation in recognition of his service and heroism. The 67th Precinct covers a portion of District 45, which Williams represents.

Detective Dalsh Veve is one of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South’s Heroes, and was injured in the line of duty on June 3, 2017 while responding to a 911 call of a house party with possible shots fired in the confines of the 67th precinct. While being dragged by a stolen vehicle for more than two blocks, Veve managed to fire off two shots, striking the driver of the vehicle.

Veve’s heroic efforts showed exemplary performance in the line duty. The Brooklynite is a 10-year veteran of the NYPD. Most recently, he suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in him being hospitalized at the Kessler Institute in New Jersey, and returned home in May of 2018.

The event is slated for 1 p.m., today, Oct. 24, at the 67th Precinct, at 2820 Snyder Avenue in Flatbush.

Treyger To Host Groundbreaking Ceremony At South Brooklyn Playground

City Councilman Mark Treyger

City Council member Mark Treyger (D-Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Coney Island, Sea Gate) and officials from NYC Parks will join community members for a groundbreaking ceremony at Lafayette Playground in Gravesend this week.

Currently a simple triangular space topped with asphalt, Lafayette Playground will be completely redesigned as a green, recreational space with lush greenery and resources for multiple uses to meet requests gathered during a community input pre-design phase.

The project is part of the City’s Community Parks Initiative, a city plan to revitalize a number of parks across the five boroughs. Treyger and local residents successfully advocated for Lafayette Playground to be included in the initiative, after it was originally left out of the plan.

The event is slated for 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, at Lafayette Playground (corner of Stillwell Avenue and Benson Avenue) in Gravesend.
