NYPD

The New York Police Department proudly reported today the an ongoing decrease in violent crime in New York City through the first seven months of 2016.

According to police statistics, there have been 9 fewer murders and 131 fewer shootings year-to-date through July, compared with 2015. There have also been 439 fewer robberies and 973 fewer burglaries year-to-date, compared with 2015.

However, August started an uptick in murders and there are now 201 homicides this year through Wednesday, five fewer than the 206 reported during the same time period last year.

In Brooklyn, through August 24, murders are down slightly with 71 reported murders so far in 2016 as compared to 73 at this time in 2015. The 71 murders is just under 40 percent of the 183 murders committed citywide thus far this year.

Reported rape in Brooklyn is even for, shooting incidents are down considerably with 206 reported incidents so far this year compared to 263 at this time in 2015.

Robber is down in Brooklyn about 12 percent for the year while felony assaults are up slightly at 3 percent..

“We are witnessing the confluence of the peace dividend and precision policing in New York City,” said Police Commissioner William J. Bratton. “Shootings continue to fall precipitously, as do overall arrests. Our takedowns are undermining even the most obstinate criminal enterprises however, contributing to a double-digit rise in gun arrests.  These results, coupled with the continued expansion of the NCO (Neighborhood Coordination Officers) program, ensure the NYPD is at the forefront of a new policing model that fosters a city that is safe and fair, everywhere for everyone. I want to commend the men and women of the department for their ongoing dedication and excellence.”
