Brooklyn’s Hakeem Jeffries poised to become first Black House speaker as Democrats projected to win control

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries moved closer to making history Tuesday night as Democrats were projected to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, putting the Brooklyn congressman in line to become the first Black speaker in the chamber’s history.

The projected Democratic victory positions Jeffries, 56, to replace Republican Speaker Mike Johnson when the new Congress convenes in January, making him one of the most powerful figures in Washington during the final two years of Trump’s presidency.
