MTA could plug projected budget holes by taking conductors off more trains, making other reforms: fiscal watchdog report

The MTA could save billions of dollars annually by making a suite of reforms to its operations, including the elimination of conductors on far more of its subway cars, according to a fiscal watchdog’s new report out Monday.

The Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) found that the MTA’s out-year deficits, which the agency itself projects will balloon to $897 million by 2030, are a result of its spending growing faster than its revenue, which goes up with biannual fare hikes.
