Council Members Julie Won and Phil Wong have raised concerns about conditions at the Borden Avenue Veterans’ Residence in Long Island City after claiming that they were initially denied entry to the city-contracted shelter during an unannounced oversight visit Thursday afternoon.
Wong and Won said they sought to perform oversight and investigative duties at the shelter, but alleged that they were denied entry, never granted approval and ultimately forced to enter the facility on their own to observe conditions inside. They added that they have a mandate under the City Charter to perform oversight over city operations as members of the City Council.
