Nearly a year after the Trump administration announced a freeze on funding for the Gateway Tunnel project, the effort to build a new two-tube rail passage beneath the Hudson River took a major step forward on Monday.

The Gateway Development Commission (GDC), the New York and New Jersey-run entity overseeing the project, launched the first of two giant drills, known as tunnel boring machines, that will soon dig the first legs of the two new tubes during a Sept. 28 ceremony in North Bergen, NJ.
