Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced scrutiny Wednesday over his administration’s reported use of the encrypted messaging app Signal to communicate with a network of social media influencers — raising questions about whether those messages are being preserved as city records.
The questions followed a report from the Columbia Journalism Review and Tow Center for Digital Journalism that found a Mayor’s Office employee runs a Signal group called NYC Creators Announcements. Members interviewed for the report said the group includes more than 200 influencers who are sent City Hall material each day, including talking points and video clips, and are offered event invitations and interviews with city officials.
