The Suffolk County Water Authority(SCWA) has revised the route that it plans to take in a proposed project to build a water main connecting to communities on the North Fork, officials said.
SCWA issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and scheduled three public hearings in August for what the agency describes as its largest single infrastructure project in its 75-year history. The goal is to provide a solution to saltwater intrusion that threatens the thinner, shallower part of the aquifer that supplies public drinking water in the Town of Southold. Changing the route from Sound Avenue to County Route 105 and Main Road is expected to have implications for the agency’s litigation with the Town of Riverhead, where officials have raised environmental concerns over the project.
