Hochul and AG James announce final rules for legislation restricting social media algorithms for young people

Gov. Kathy Hochul and state Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday that they have finalized the rules social media companies will be ordered to follow to protect children and teens in New York from addictive and harmful algorithms per the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act.

Under the new rules, which take effect on Jan. 25, 2027, social media sites will be required to verify the age of users who claim to be over 17 through methods such as government-issued ID verification, image or video verification, or email and phone number cross-checking.
