U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) visited Riverhead — known as Long Island’s breadbasket — on July 17 to sound the alarm on how rising inflation is making groceries more expensive for working families.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported that headline inflation — which includes food and energy prices — rose 4.2% over the last year. The senator blamed President Donald Trump’s war in Iran and tariffs for the rise, urging Congress to invest more in local farmers and reverse the administration’s cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to ease the affordability crisis.
