DOT starts work on Fordham Road project to boost speeds on Bronx’s busiest bus corridor

The city Department of Transportation on Wednesday kicked off construction on a long-stalled project to add offset bus lanes to a stretch of Fordham Road — the Bronx’s busiest bus corridor, where the vehicles crawl at speeds as slow as five miles per hour during peak times.

DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn, during a July 23 groundbreaking ceremony at the intersection of Fordham and Kingsbridge Roads, said the throughfare’s buses are often slowed by traffic. The slugglish speeds at which the buses on Fordham Road move make them some of the slowest in the country, he said.
