Fifth death reported in Upper East Side Legionnaires’ outbreak as Council questions city response

A fifth person has died in the Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, as confirmatory testing found live Legionella bacteria in 34 cooling towers at 33 buildings, city health officials said Tuesday.

The Health Department said the cluster had grown to 82 cases as of July 21, with eight people still hospitalized and 56 discharged.
