It’s the beginning of the end for Rikers Island.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration moved Monday to restart a long-dormant piece of New York City’s plan to close the infamous jail facility, permanently shuttering the North Infirmary Command and transferring the vacant jail building, along with large portions of two other no-longer-populated facilities, from the Department of Correction to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
