Op-Ed | The unsung winner of the Democratic Primaries? Governor Kathy Hochul.

By any estimation, the June 2026 primary elections in New York were historic. Long-standing incumbents were toppled, reshaping beliefs about political power in neighborhoods across New York. But as so many established leaders lost their seats on election night, one leader defied the odds, the politics forecasters, and the pundits, entering primary night with nothing to worry about. Governor Kathy Hochul’s success was clear months ago, when she successfully defeated her primary challenger before he could even appear on the ballot.

Two years ago, the Democratic consultant class who failed to understand Governor Hochul’s political instincts pored over who could take her on. She had successfully fended off two challengers in 2022 to secure her first full term as Governor, but early last year, many speculated whether her opponent, her own Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado might catch fire.
