A federal court put a pause on Nassau County’s “buffer zone bill” on Thursday that prohibits protest within 100 feet of houses of worship, marking a win for those who’ve pushed back against such legislation with First Amendment concerns in the first judicial test of laws like this.
Nassau’s buffer zone law – which prohibits protest, oral advocacy and literature distribution within 35 feet of houses of worship and bans approaching people to engage in that conduct within 100 feet of those places – is much more extreme than similar legislation passed by New York City and New York State.
