Horse carriage controversy: Drivers union suspends Central Park equine operations in wake of tourist death

Facing mounting political pressure, the union representing horse carriage drivers suspended all hansom cab operations inside Central Park on Thursday, less than 24 hours after an 18-year-old man was killed when the horse-drawn cab he was in flipped over.

Alexander Kemp, administrative vice president for the union, TWU Local 100, announced the suspension of horse-carriage rides inside the park in a June 18 statement, where he cited the gravity of the passenger death.
