Town of Oyster Bay unveils new sign at site of historic fort in Masspaequa

Oyster Bay Town and local Massapequa officials unveiled a new sign on Friday, April 24 dedicated to the historic Fort Massapeag, the only archaeologically documented Native American fort in Nassau County with an extensive history, located in modern-day Massapequa.

“Many who live on Long Island may be aware that this land was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, and that many of our communities are named for or by the respective tribes that once lived here – but they may not be aware just how significant certain areas may be,” Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Supervisor said, as a sign was planted on Friday, April 24 at the Fort Massapead Historical Site at 5 Fairfax Road in Massapequa.
