Mahmoud Khalil, Columbia University protest organizer, will be rearrested and deported, DHS claims

Mahmoud Khalil, the pro-Palestinian protest organizer at Columbia University whose detainment last year made national headlines, will be re-detained by ICE and deported, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said Wednesday.

Khalil, who has a valid green card, was originally arrested on March 8, 2025, and held in ICE detention for several months in 2025 for what officials said, at the time, was his role in the Columbia University protests. He was held for several months before a long legal battle secured his release.
