The Public Employees Federation represents about 50,000 members with professional, scientific, and technical titles across New York State, including the research scientists who helped develop testing for the COVID-19 virus. President Wayne Spence explains why he doesn’t like the terms “essential” and “nonessential”, and instead prefers “mission critical” and “non-mission critical” to refer to outward-facing and inward-facing professions, respectively. His goals for the coming year are informed by the hardships of the past few years – preparing for the eventuality of new COVID variants and securing PPE and other health and safety resources for his members.
