Labor Power Players: Wayne Spence, President of NYS PEF

The Public Employees Federation represents about 50,000 members with professional, scientific, and technical titles across New York State, including the research scientists who helped develop testing for the COVID-19 virus. President Wayne Spence explains why he doesn’t like the terms “essential” and “nonessential”, and instead prefers “mission critical” and “non-mission critical” to refer to outward-facing and inward-facing professions, respectively. His goals for the coming year are informed by the hardships of the past few years – preparing for the eventuality of new COVID variants and securing PPE and other health and safety resources for his members.
