Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson announced today that Janet Peguero will serve as the new deputy Bronx borough president.

It is the first time both positions are held by women of color, and Peguero, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic raised by school aides, is the borough’s first deputy borough president of Dominican descent.

“Janet Peguero has worked tirelessly to amplify the voices of women and Bronxites, and played a critical role in electing women of color to city government last year,” Gibson said. “I have always said you cannot be what you cannot see, and as the first deputy borough president of Dominican descent, she will bring a new voice to this role and show little girls everywhere they can reach the highest levels of government and make a difference in their communities. My staff and I look forward to working with Deputy Borough President Peguero as we create our blueprint and vision for the Bronx.”
