A majority of the U.S. House of Representatives voted on Thursday to approve a Senate-passed measure that avoids a partial government shutdown by funding federal agencies into the new fiscal year that begins on Friday.
The bill now goes to President Joe Biden, who was expected to sign the measure into law before a midnight deadline, when current government funding is set to expire.
However, another test of President Joe Biden’s agenda lies ahead as the House of Representatives prepared to vote on a $1 trillion infrastructure bill.
Some progressive Democrats vowed to vote against the bill to invest in the nation’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure, angry that Democrats have not yet reached agreement on a multi-trillion-dollar companion bill with funding for social services and to address climate change.
