Schumer Calls on Judge Barrett to Recuse Self from ACA Cases

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said Sunday that given her serious conflicts of interest, Judge Amy Coney Barrett must immediately pledge to recuse herself from decisions involving the Affordable Care Act and the 2020 Election.

The Senate hearing to consider Judge Barret as the next Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court began on Monday.

“It is clear that Judge Barrett would strike down the Affordable Care Act that has delivered quality and affordable healthcare to millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions, and that President Trump thinks he needs her on the high court to help him win re-election,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “With these serious conflicts of interest, Judge Barrett must immediately do the bare minimum and pledge to recuse herself from decisions involving the ACA and the 2020 election.”

Schumer said, should she even be confirmed through an already illegitimate, dangerous and widely unpopular nomination process, that Judge Barrett must do the right thing and recuse herself now. Schumer detailed how Judge Barrett has already made it clear she stands against the ACA and healthcare protections Americans have come to depend upon. Schumer also said President Trump has all but said he desperately needs Judge Barrett on the high court just in case the 2020 election results require a Supreme Court decision.

Schumer said these variables are unprecedented and that they demand recusal, especially with the court scheduled to decide on the ACA (California v. Texas) just days after the November election. Schumer said recusal would be the bare minimum for Judge Barrett to commit to as he makes his case on behalf of the American people, who overwhelmingly agree.
