City Councilmember Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria, Rikers Island, parts of Jackson Heights, Woodside, and East Elmhurst) announced earlier this week that he endorsed Nick Roloson to replace him in the New York City Council.
Roloson is a progressive Democrat and Constantinides current chief of staff.
“I knew from the moment I first met Nick that he was a natural leader who was going to make this city a better place,” Constantinides said.
Constantinides district, District 22, will be one of the 35 council seats opening up the end of 2021 because of term limits.
This is the first endorsement in the City Council District 22 race according to the press release.
Roloson and Constantinides have known each other since 2008. They led the St. John’s University Young Democrats respectively and worked side by side for the Queens County Young Democrats.
Roloson managed Constantinides 2013 city council campaign and has served as his chief of staff since 2014.
“Costa is the best friend, boss, and mentor a person could ask for,” Roloson said. “His endorsement in the race is a critical sign of support for our campaign and it is incredibly meaningful on a personal level.”
Over the last decade, Constantinides and Roloson have worked to improve the lives of New Yorkers, the press release said. They worked to enact the Climate Mobilization Act, which they called the Green New Deal for the City of New York and an ambitious step in fighting climate change.
From organizing activists, to securing $30 million for Astoria Park and passing the Climate Mobilization Act, Constantinides gets the job done, Roloson said.
Roloson said his work with Constantinides over the last eight years are examples of what he’ll continue doing for the community if elected.
“Costa’s vision was always much bigger than his eight years in office,” said Roloson. “I look forward to continuing his work for a more sustainable District 22.”
