Cuomo Says New York May Be Flattening the Curve

Governor Andrew Cuomo
Governor Andrew Cuomo

Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) appeared as a guest on MSNBC’s “Politics Nation” on Sunday, offering some cautiously optimistic news about the COVID-19 crisis in New York.

On that day, New York saw a drop in the rate of new COVID-19 infections for the first time in a while. Cuomo told “Nation” host Al Sharpton that this could be an early sign of New York turning a corner; however, it’s too early to say for sure.

“We’ve been tracking the numbers,” said Cuomo. “We track the numbers every day. Today for the first day we had a drop. We have to wait for tomorrow’s numbers but the optimistic view is that we’re starting to see a turn in the curve and then the turn in the curve can either be a plateau, where you have a high rate and you bounce up and down but basically at about the same level and then start to drop, or it could just be a precipitous drop down which would obviously be most beneficial.”

Yesterday, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) called on four major credit card companies to waive all transaction fees associated with nonprofit donations.

In a letter to the CEOs of Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express, Hoylman wrote that nonprofits across New York have been playing an important role in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they’re relying heavily on donations from New Yorkers in order to continue that work.

“Many nonprofits in my district are relying heavily on the generosity of New Yorkers to continue this crucial work,” wrote Hoylman. “I am calling on you to help these organizations and facilitate donations by removing transaction fees for those donations. We are all in this together. Please take this bold step to give those struggling a fighting chance.”
