Maloney Introduces Bill to Extend Veteran’s Housing Benefits to Co-Ops

Yesterday, Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) introduced the Fair Co-Cops for Veterans Act alongside Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC).

Through its home loan guaranty program, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) helps guarantee loans that veterans and servicemembers obtain through private lenders. If the homeowner defaults on said loan, VA will cover the debt owed to the lender. Currently, the program does not include cooperative housing (co-ops).

“In New York City, co-ops are ubiquitous, and our veterans shouldn’t be priced out of these housing options because they’re excluded from the VA’s loan program,” said Maloney. “Wherever veterans want to buy a home – whether in rural or urban areas – they should have equal loan support from the VA.”

Tomorrow, Council Member Carlina Rivera (D-East Village, Gramercy Park) will be speaking at a forum on the 2020 Census, hosted by the Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club.

Rivera will join representatives from the Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) to explain what, exactly, is at stake this year. The Census determines both the amount of funding each state gets and their level of representation in Congress; if New York is undercounted, they may lose congressional seats.

The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at Tara Rose, 384 3rd Ave.
