Sanders’ Bill to Reduce Potentially Toxic Mercury in Lamps Gets Enacted

State Sen. James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) proudly announced yesterday that Governor Cuomo has signed another of his bills into law. 

Bill S.2139 would address the serious health risks posed to New York State residents by the amount of mercury in mercury-added lamps.

“We want to reduce the risk of potentially dangerous mercury from getting into our water, soil or atmosphere. Mercury pollution is a serious threat to the environment and our health, and as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” said Sanders.


Constantinides, School Officials to Open New Hydroponic Science Lab

City Council Member Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria, East Elmhurst, parts of Long Island City, Woodside), faculty and staff, members of the Department of Education tomorrow will unveil a new hydroponic science lab at P.S. 17. 

This opening reflects continued investments in these hands-on laboratories, which offer vital lessons in biology, technology, nutrition, and agriculture. With the Fiscal Year 2020 budget’s passage this June, Constantinides has secured funding for a hydroponic science or STEM lab for every school in Council District 22. 

The unveiling is slated for 12:30 p.m., tomorrow, Dec. 18 at P.S. 17 Henry David Thoreau, 28-37 29th Street in Astoria.


Weprin To Collect Toys for a Holiday Drive in Memory of Jason Mark Weinstein

Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Richmond Hill, Fresh Meadows) will be joined by Principal Jeffrey Slivko, teachers and students from the Irwin Altman Middle School 172 to donate toys raised for a Holiday Toy Drive in Memory of Jason Mark Weinstein. 

Weinstein, a music therapist died suddenly in 2017 at 43, leaving behind his wife Elana, two children, Noah and Mia, his parents Judge Jeremy S. Weinstein and Elaine Weinstein, his sister, Tara Weinstein Halpern and her husband, Jakob Halpern, and their children, Isaiah, Naomi, and Jordan. Jason lived his life for his children and for helping others.

This year will mark the fifth year Weprin and MS 172 Queens have partnered together on the Holiday Toy Drive.

Weprin will donate the toys at 9 a.m., today, Dec. 17 at MS 172 Q, 81-14 257th Street in Glen Oaks.


Katz, Borough Board To Hear Fire Prevention, Bridge Repair Presentations

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and the Borough Board today will hear a presentation from the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) regarding fire prevention and safety during the holiday season. The presentation will review best practices for promoting fire safety awareness.

In addition, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will deliver a presentation about the start of a multi-year project to rebuild the upper roadway deck of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. The DOT will provide an overview of the scope of the work, the phasing of the work and the expected timeframe for completion.

The meeting is slated for 9:30 a.m., today, Dec. 17 at Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens.


Vallone, Student Ambassadors To Bring Holiday Cheer To St. Mary’s Kids

City Council Member Paul Vallone (D-Alley Pond Park, Bay Terrace, Bayside, College Point, Douglaston, East Elmhurst, Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Little Neck, Whitestone) and his Student Ambassadors today will drop off holiday toys to the kids at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children in Bayside. 

The toys were collected through a drive organized by the Council Member’s Student Ambassadors from Bayside High School, Holy Cross High School, St. Agnes Academic High School and World Journalism Preparatory School, in collaboration with Whitestone’s Dwarf Giraffe Athletic League.

The dropoff is slated for 4:30 p.m., today, Dec. 17 at St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, 29-01 216th Street in Bayside.
