Deutsch Announces Safety Enhancements At Coney Island Intersection

City Councilman Chaim Deutsch

City Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D-Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, Homecrest, Midwood) that he has secured funding for one of the most dangerous intersections in Coney Island – West 5th Street and Neptune Avenue.

The intersection is in the center of a heavily senior neighborhood, with thousands of apartments within a several block radius. For years, residents complained about short crossing times and dangerous crossing conditions. In the last five years, there have been 48 crashes with injuries at this site, including 17 pedestrians struck, two bicyclists struck, and 29 vehicle occupants injured. Data indicates that 30% of motor vehicle crashes were left turn related.

Deutsch made repeated requests to the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) for safety improvements. Last year, Deutsch visited the site along with Brooklyn DOT Commissioner Keith Bray to demand urgent attention. Now, DOT has announced their intentions to install two left-turn signals on Neptune Avenue at West 5th Street, one for cars traveling eastbound, and one for cars traveling westbound.

“Our community’s voice has finally been heard,” said Deutsch. “Brighton Beach and Coney Island have some of the highest senior populations in New York City, and we need to be making their safety a top priority. Crossing the street shouldn’t involve taking your life into your hands. I look forward to the swift implementation of these new left-turn signals, and the resulting improved safety conditions.”

Treyger Secures Funding To Improve Cleaning Efforts In Southern Brooklyn

Council Member Mark Treyger

City Council Member Mark Treyger (D-Coney Island, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend) today will gather with other elected officials to announce he has secured significant investments in NYC Clean-Up Initiative funding and additional litter basket pick-up services along several Southern Brooklyn corridors.

In Fiscal 2020 Adopted Budget, the Council worked with the Administration to secure $8.6 million in one-time funding for the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to provide supplementary litter basket pickup service across each community board and council district. The rollout date for this service started in mid-August and each council member proposed two areas “hot spots” on a block or specific corridor for litter baskets.

Treyger has strongly advocated for increasing clean-up services to Southern Brooklyn. From Fiscal Years 2016 – 2020, he has secured hundreds of thousands of dollars for beautification clean-up efforts from his discretionary funds to improve street corridors and has hosted multiple neighborhood clean-up events throughout the year to address this quality of life concern.

Today Treyger will announce new clean-up initiatives to enhance the major commercial street corridors in Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Coney Island and Gravesend.

The announcement is slated for 12 noon, today, Nov. 7 Outside Lenny’s Pizza; 1969 86th Street in Bath Beach.

Schumer Presses Trump On Passage Of Background Check Legislation

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer

U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) yesterday sent a letter to President Trump urging him to call upon Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to take up House-passed, bipartisan, commonsense background checks legislation that passed the House 250 days ago this week.

The letter comes as press reports indicate that Trump has shelved his plans to address the gun violence crisis because of political concerns.

“Unfortunately, there are indications you have reversed your support for passing gun violence prevention legislation. Sadly, it has been reported that this is because of concerns about your re-election and a desire to appease special interests like the NRA [National Rifle Association],” the lawmakers wrote.

“And, noting this reversal, Leader McConnell has, once again, followed your example, and refused to bring commonsense, bipartisan, life-saving legislation passed by the House to the Floor,” they added.
