Ampry-Samuel, Shirley Chisholm Early Childhood Center Students Hold Art Exhibit

City Council member Alicka Ampry-Samuel (D-Brownsville, East Flatbush, Crown Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant) will join with students from the SCO Family of Services’ Shirley Chisholm Early Childhood Center to present Studio in a School art exhibit. 

Preschoolers of Shirley Chisholm have been participating in the program throughout the year due to funding by Council Member Ampry-Samuels’ office. 

Studio in a School’s early childhood artists worked with SCO staff at Shirley Chisholm to create personal works of art. The staff provided on-site mentoring and coaching to support the teachers in activating their art centers and displaying children’s work. The staff also helped to provide workshops for parents. SCO Family of Services’ will be holding a reception at the program to present Ampry-Samuel with the outcome of the initiative.

SCO Family of Services is an organization that provides family services to young children, youth and adults to help stabilize and strengthen families and unlock potential for children and adults with special needs. SCO has played a vital role delivering human services in communities throughout New York City and Long Island for more than 100 years. 

The event is slated for 10 a.m., today, Tuesday, June 25, at the Shirley Chisholm Early Childhood Center, 69-71 Saratoga Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.


 BP Adams To Denounce Growing Housing Theft Crisis In Brooklyn

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will join with local homeowner Dairus Griffiths today to denounce the growing housing theft crisis sweeping through Brooklyn. 

Griffiths, according to a Daily news report, may be on the verge of losing his home of 30 years in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, after falling victim to a predatory scheme.Griffiths, a plumber by trade, claims he was duped by real estate speculators into selling his Halsey St. home, and for nearly five years he’s been mired in a legal fight to hold on to it. 

Adams will join with Mr. Griffiths and his family in front of their property to decry the epidemic of housing theft taking place across Brooklyn, and announce a GoFundMe page dedicated to helping the family with the cost of legal services.

The Borough President, who last year held a hearing on housing theft at Borough Hall, has called for a “full-scale, forensic audit and investigation” into the root causes of the current crisis. He has also been a vocal critic of the City’s Third Party Transfer (TPT) program, which he believes has become susceptible to various forms of fraud.

The event is slated for 11 a.m., today, June 25, at  650 Halsey Street, between Malcom X Boulevard and Patchen Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.


Cumbo To Celebrate NYC 2020 Budget Wins For Arts, Culture & Libraries

Majority Leader City Council member Laurie Cumbo (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights) will join with leaders from cultural organizations across Brooklyn to celebrate historical financial wins in this year’s city budget (FY20). 

This year’s budget included $33 million investment in libraries, which will go toward funding early literacy programs and programs for immigrants, and help assure a “fair and accurate census count,” according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Also this year’s budget included designating the Weeksville Heritage Center as a Cultural Institutions Group (CIG). The designation protects the historical African American settlement by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). This also marks the first black CIG in Brooklyn.

The event is slated for 12-noon, today, June 25, Brooklyn Music School, 126 St Felix Street in Fort Greene.


Deutsch Applauds Sanitation Budget Wins In NYC Fiscal Budget 2020

City Councilmember Chaim Deutsch (D-Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, Homecrest, Midwood) this week announced budgetary win in the New York City Fiscal Year 2020 Budget for sanitation cleanup across the city and the 48 Council District. 

This year the budget included funding corner wastebasket collections in every commercial corridor across the five boroughs. Additionally, Deutsch announced sanitation budget wins for his district including $220,000 to NYC Sanitation for manual litter patrols at problem areas. A manual litter patrols means that Sanitation workers will go out and collect litter, dumped trash, and garbage left in a particular area.

“I’m thrilled to have worked closely with Speaker Corey Johnson and Sanitation Committee Chairman Antonio Reynoso to fund corner wastebasket collections in every one of our City’s commercial corridors – seven days a week! Last year, I was able to secure funds for our district, and this year the entire New York City will have this service. In addition to this, I’m working on obtaining additional corner wastebaskets in areas with heavy foot traffic in our district.” said Deutsch

“I know about issues under train trestles, at Brighton Beach Avenue, and on/around Sheepshead Bay Road, but I want to hear from you! Please respond to me with any areas in our district that you believe need frequent cleaning, and we’ll get it done!” added Deutsch.
