Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) appeared on CNN’s “At This Hour” to discuss the prospect of closing the southern U.S. border.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump (R) reneged on his threat to stem illegal immigration by closing the U.S. – Mexico border. Espaillat, who recently travelled to Mexico as part of a congressional delegation, called Trump’s retraction a “wise decision”, claiming that a border lockdown would have had disastrous consequences.

“Closing the border would…cripple the economy in some of our border states,” said Espaillat. “Yesterday I met with President Lopez Obrador, and he’s very enthusiastic about creating what he called ‘curtains’ of economic development – reforestation for the Chiapas state in the southern border, a rail line on Costa Maya, and infrastructure in the northern border, all of which will create jobs in Mexico and reduce migration.”

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Upper East Side) has introduced a new bill that would enact the creation of the Smithsonian Women’s History Museum in Washington, D.C.

The idea of a women’s history museum was first pitched by Maloney in 2016. Later that year, a bipartisan Congressional Commission issued a report on the idea, which concluded that the country both needs and deserves such a museum.

“I believe that one of the most important things we can do is show young women and girls they can be and do anything,” said Maloney. “How can we empower women if we do not even recognize them?”
