Maloney Gives Grim Assessment of GDP Numbers

Representative Carolyn Maloney released a statement yesterday after the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) sent out its third estimate of fourth quarter GDP.

The BEA’s report said that GDP grew at a rate of 2.2 percent in the final quarter of 2018 – a little less than their initial estimate of 2.6. Maloney said that the drop should be taken as a sign that the economic boost provided by Trump’s tax cuts is already waning.

“As these numbers from the fourth quarter of last year make clear, the sugar high from the Republican tax cuts is over and our economy is now facing real headwinds thanks to the policies of the Trump Administration,” said Maloney.

Kallos’s “Healthy Happy Meals” Bill Passes Council

A bill that requires New York restaurants to offer healthier beverage options on their children’s menus, written by City Councilman Ben Kallos (D-Yorkville, Lenox Hill), passed the Council yesterday.

The bill, Int. 1064-B, mandates that restaurants limit their selections of kids’ meal beverages that are high in sugar. Combination meals may only offer water, milk or juice as a default drink option, although customers can still opt for a soft drink if they specifically ask for one. Restaurants who violate this new law will be fined.

“Healthy drinks with kid’s meals will be the new normal in New York City no matter where they are eating,” said Kallos. “While parents can still order whatever they want the default will be healthy. Healthy beverages by default are proven way to keep sugary drinks away our children, so they can avoid childhood obesity and grow up to be strong and healthy.”
