BP Adams, Deutsch Stand In Solidarity With Muslim Community In Wake of New Zealand Mosque Attacks

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams
City Councilman Chaim Deutsch

Borough President Eric L. Adams and City Council member Chaim Deutsch (D-Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, Homecrest, Midwood) sent out their condolences and are standing in solidarity with the local Muslim community in the wake of the terror attack at two mosques in New Zealand.

On Friday, two churches in central Christchurch were the target of a series of attacks that have left many injured and several dead. According to NBC News, authorities confirmed that there were multiple deaths and that four suspects were in custody. They hadn’t said yet how many people were killed, but “it is clear that this is one of New Zealand’s darkest days,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

Additionally, Adams will join with Muslim and faith leaders to pray and call on Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio to deploy police presence to mosques throughout New York State as an act of precaution.

“This is horrible. My heart goes out to the victims and families affected by this attack. I stand united with my Muslim constituents and friends during this difficult and painful time,” said Deutsch through social media.

Adams’ event is slated for 12:30 p.m., today, March 15, at Makki Masjid Muslim Community Center, at 1089 Coney Island Avenue in Ditmas Park.

Colton Celebrates Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day

Assembly Member William Colton

Assembly member William Colton (D–Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, and Dyker Heights) celebrated the contribution of all women around the world last week in honor of International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year and celebrates womanhood. The day has been observed since the early 1900s and now is recognized each year during the month of March. March is also recognized as Women’s History Month.

Colton will also host his annual event to celebrate the achievements of women in his district next week.

“Women play an inspiring role in our society, and we must recognize the ones that are going above and beyond to create a better and brighter future for the next generation. Many women these days raise a family and have a job, which is not easy. Our children must learn how important the role of a woman is,” stated Colton.

“For many years my office has been recognizing a number of distinguished women in our neighborhood. It has become a tradition and this year once again we will be honoring many great women for their achievements,” added Colton.

The event is slated for 12-noon, Sunday, March 24, at Colton’s District Office, at 29 Bay 25th Street in Bath Beach.

Rose Backs Effort To Restore Net Neutrality Protections

Max Rose
U.S. Rep.-Elect Max Rose

Congressman Max Rose (D-South Brooklyn, Staten Island) is supporting efforts to restore critical net neutrality protections for consumers to prevent internet service providers from blocking or limiting internet access.

The Save the Internet Act, which Rose is a co-sponsor of, would codify into law the net neutrality principles that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) originally adopted in 2015. The measure would enact the three legacy net neutrality principles—no blocking, no throttling and no paid prioritization—and empower the FCC to prohibit unjust, unreasonable and discriminatory practices.

The legislation also ensures consumers can make informed decisions when shopping for internet plans and codifies the FCC’s 2015 Open Internet Order.

In December 2017, the FCC voted to repeal net neutrality regulations, giving Internet Service Providers free reign to block access to internet content, slow consumer’s internet speeds, and prioritize giant corporations over small businesses. This bill ensures that the Internet remains an open platform for all Americans and gives small businesses room to innovate and compete.

“It’s time for Congress take action to restore these critical protections, because internet access is too vital to nearly every aspect of our daily lives to be trusting telecom lobbyists and special interests to do the right thing,” said Rose.

BP Adams Celebrates Justice Ginsburg’s Birthday, Pushes For Renaming of Building

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will host an 86th birthday rally today for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a native of Flatbush and noted civil rights champion who is celebrating her 25th year as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Adams and fellow well-wishers will fête Justice Ginsburg with birthday cake, a birthday card, and song including remarks from State Senator Brian Kavanagh, Assembly member Jo Anne Simon, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership President Regina Myer, Brooklyn Historical Society President Deborah Schwartz, and others.

The rally will also amplify the campaign he launched six months ago to rename the Brooklyn Municipal Building, an historic edifice in Downtown Brooklyn that houses a number of City offices, in her honor. Currently there are more than 86,000 signatures have been recorded at Change.org/RBG calling on Mayor Bill de Blasio to grant the honor — similar to the action taken to rename the Manhattan Municipal Building after former Mayor David Dinkins.

The celebration comes just two days after an advertisement featuring an image of Justice Ginsburg inside the Nassau Street subway station in Greenpoint was defaced with hateful anti-Semitic graffiti.

At the event, Adams and others will uplift the life story of Justice Ginsburg and her work to combat bigotry as emblematic of New York City’s values.

The event is slated for 8 a.m., today, March 15, at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Fulton Alley, at 209 Joralemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
