Cumbo, Advocates To Rally For Equal Pay Legislation

City Council Member Laurie Cumbo

City Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights) alongside advocates and CWA 1180 will join together to call attention to the gender pay and opportunity gap for women in New York today.

The rally will push for support for Int. 633, a local law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to reporting of pay and employment equity data. The measure is set for a vote later today at the City Council stated meeting.

Women employed in New York City’s municipal government face a gender wage gap that is three times larger than the gap experienced by women working in the private sector.

Additionally, women of color are disproportionately hurt by the gender wage gap, with Hispanic, Black, and Asian women experiencing a 54 percent, 45 percent, and 37 percent wage gap compared to white men, respectively.

The event is slated for 11 a.m., today, Dec. 20, on the Steps of City Hall in Lower Manhattan.

Brooklyn State Senators-elect Zellnor Myrie (D-Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Gowanus, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, South Slope, Sunset Park), Andrew Gounardes (D-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, Borough Park and Midwood) and Julia Salazar (D-Williamsburg, Bushwick, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant) who will join the New York State Senate in January released a strong joint statement in support of congestion pricing this week.

On Wednesday, the group of newly elected democrats called on support for the plan to raise revenue for the embattled Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), stating its “unique potential of raising over a billion dollars each year dedicated to transit.”

In February, the Governor Andrew Cuomo released a funding plan that included the proposal that would create a congestion zone and tolling drivers entering the Manhattan Central Business District (MCBD) in order to raise the $1.5 billion annually the transit authority needs to fix the system.

“In 2019, we intend to deliver on our promises and begin to bring the MTA and its infrastructure into the modern era of service provision after a generation of disinvestment. We support a comprehensive, robust, fair, and sustainable funding plan for the MTA that includes congestion pricing at its core. Congestion pricing has the unique potential of raising over a billion dollars each year dedicated to transit.

We must also ensure that the MTA is held accountable. We will work to provide the resources it needs to modernize our transit system but will also make sure that they are spent wisely and transparently and in the best interest of the customers that the system is meant to serve.

Together, we pledge to design a funding plan that promotes the efficiency that transit affords across the entire region. We must reach deep into subway deserts and suburban areas where commutes are can be especially long and unreliable. The task before us is a big one but completing it is central to restoring trust in government and cementing the economic future for all New Yorkers,” read the joint statement.
